Film Review

Very underrated celebration of magic, romance and believing in your dreams and making them come true. Olivia Newton John has a natural, open-hearted and playful presence that fits the movie perfectly. There are 3 or 4 show stopping scenes: – The scene where the girls on the mural come alive and dance to the ELO song I'm Alive, – The scene where Olivia Newton John playfully flirts with Michael Beck as she roller skates to her song Magic – Gene Kelly reminisces about his experience with Olivia Newton John and ends up dancing with her – The scene inter-cutting the The Tubes playing and the big-band performing until their music merges together – The concluding dance number with different costumes and the title song being playedThere is a positive, optimistic spirit to the movie that comes across as very genuine and heartfelt. All the actors, and Olivia Newton John especially, are appealing, full of laughter and love. There are some flaws, but the magic and message of love, laughter an…

I've noticed many reviewers here and elsewhere saying things like "worst movie ever", "horrific", etc. Honestly, LIGHTEN UP. If you want to see the worst movie ever, it would be one of a series of bombs by J-Lo for example like Anaconda or Gigi, or anything by David Hasselholf, not this charming, bizarre yet lovable piece of '80s cheese. I once read somewhere that a critic wondered aloud how someone could come up with this plot, even if "everyone was doing handstands in piles of cocaine back then", LOL. Or was that a review of the '80s sci-fi movie Dune? No matter, I can see where it could apply to Xanadu as well. The reason to watch this movie is for the escapism, the mostly excellent soundtrack and the absolutely mesmerizing Olivia Newton-John. I was in 2nd grade when I first saw this on TV and was completely drawn to Olivia, I credit her for being the first female to make me realize that there was something I liked very much about girls, …

I have read that a Xanadu remake is in the works right now! Its in the very early stages but how exciting! Here is part of what I have read:Sony Pictures CEO, Michael Lynton tells Hillel Italie of the Associated Press that a Xanadu remake/sequel "is imminent!" Weeks after negotiating a deal with MGM/MCA, the currently struggling studio responsible for the original 1980 box office disaster, Sony leaked its plans to re-launch the title with a whole new hyper-stylized approach. The rest is at The Mighty Tide Of Justice website. If it is really happening I can't imagine how great a current version made on a budget will be!
