A week in the life of Ben, a powerful Hollywood producer, as he juggles negotiations with a studio head so that his newest picture can open at Cannes in two weeks, with a high-strung director who must make edits to the film, with an actor and his agent because the star has arrived on the set of a new picture with a full beard, and with his most recent ex-wife, Kelly, whom he discovers may have a lover. He also notices that his 17-year old daughter, from another marriage, has probably been crying. What’s up? Can Ben keep it all together, get the green light from the studio to go to Cannes, move his new picture past the beard crisis, and maybe return to Kelly’s good graces?

Film Review

While watching this movie I asked myself two questions, can Robert DeNiro do comedy and who directed this? I was surprised and shocked that Bary Levinson was the director. He must be doing drugs like his alter-ego in the film. The real problem with the film is the script. To put it simply, the script sucks. Example: DeNiro calls his ex-wife and she gets upset. They almost slept together in the morning and now she gets all upset because he calls her. Why? John Turturro, who I have never liked, plays a ridiculous character, totally unbelievable as a Hollywood agent. Catherine Keener gives a bland performance. No way is she believable as the head of a movie studio. This film looks like it was directed by someone just out of film school and who got all F's, which is what I give this film, an F.

What Just Happened (2008)Nothing happened, and nothing is going to happen, and maybe that's the point. But it's a drag to try to get absorbed in a movie that has so many hooks (like major stars in cameo roles) and such little meat. Or even veggie burger. It's a dismissible farce, top to bottom. And I tried to like it. I mean, it is funny for a minute that Bruce Willis has a big beard and won't shave it, but man, they drag it out, over and over again, like an old joke we've never heard. If this wasn't a comedy and was all about Hollywood's excess, critically, then we might tsk tsk and say, too bad. But it's supposed to be funny! Haha. Give it a try. You'll laugh, you'll enjoy the company of some of the people, and some of the scenes really are funny, briefly. But that's giving it the benefit of a truckload of doubts. Yes, Robert De Niro holds up his part of things, wearily. Catherine Keener if strong in her minor part. Robin Wright …

Unnecessarily arty, boring, pointless. Glad I didn't see those reviews before seeing the film. I saw because it had John Turturo in it and as usual he didn't let me down. A great character actor in a movie full of great characters. This is not the Coen bros but it is very much character based rather than story, action or special effects. The characters are well observed and played and there are many of them.If you like actors playing great characters rather than lots of noise and action this is for you.It made me smile a lot.
